The Super Eagles broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, with defender Semi Ajayi rising highest to power home a header and put Nigeria ahead.
Tanzania came out stronger after the break and was quickly rewarded. Just five minutes into the second half, Charles M’Mombwa found the back of the net to restore parity.
In the 52nd minute, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman struck the decisive goal, restoring the Super Eagles’ lead and ultimately sealing all three points for the home side.
What Akpeyi said
Reacting to the match while speaking as an analyst on SuperSport, Akpeyi commended Nigeria’s overall display, while also acknowledging Tanzania’s resilience.
He said, “I think they played well. They deserved the win. Tanzania also deserves credit for its performance.”
The former goalkeeper also highlighted the importance of the victory for Nigerian fans, especially given the timing of the match.
“The Super Eagles gave Nigerians a good Xmas gift, and hopefully, they will do well in the next game,” he added.
Attention now turns to Nigeria’s next Group C fixture, where the Super Eagles will face the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia on Saturday.
