After winning European Cup, Offiong Edem bows out of World Championship

Offiong Edem suffered an early defeat against the Chinese Zhu Chengzhu in the first round.

Nigeria's table tennis star, Offiong Edem, has bowed out of the World Table Tennis Championship after setting a record in Europe.

Pulse Sports reported that Edem became the first Nigerian to win the European Cup women’s table tennis title.

The 36-year-old Nigeria’s second-ranked table tennis star won the first European title for the ASD Quattro Mori Cagliari club.

Offiong Edem at the Tokyo Olympics

Offiong, who is presently rated 142nd in the world, was overjoyed to assist her Italian Quattro Mori Cagliari in their historic victory over the Hungarian SH ITB Budaorsi Sports Club in the two-leg final in Budapest.

The Calabar-born table tennis player competed for Nigeria at the 2004, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics. She qualified to represent Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Edem Bows out of world table tennis Championship

Offiong Edem suffered an early defeat against the Chinese Zhu Chengzhu in the first round.

The Nigerian star, started with a win in the set and lost all five sets to Chengzhu 4-1 (9-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-5, 11-0).

Olufunke Oshoniake

Edem joined Olufunke Oshonaike, who had earlier bowed out of the championship.

Africa's medal hopeful, Aruna, defeated Ionescu 4-2 (11-7, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-9) while Taiwo came from behind to record a victory against Jancarik 4-2 (7-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8).
