Vincent Enyeama has been joined in the pantheon of Champions League goalkeepers by the Eagles hero
Benfica sealed a dramatic Champions League night against Real Madrid thanks to extraordinary late heroics, as goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin wrote his name into European history.
The Ukrainian shot-stopper became only the fifth goalkeeper ever to score in the UEFA Champions League, joining Nigerian legend Vincent Enyeama in an exclusive record club.
Trubin’s stunning late goal seals famous Benfica night
Benfica dominated large spells of the contest and created several early chances, only to fall behind against the run of play when Kylian Mbappé headed Real Madrid into the lead.
The hosts responded almost immediately, with Andreas Schjelderup levelling before Vangelis Pavlidis converted from the penalty spot to give Benfica the advantage at the break.
Schjelderup struck again in the second half to extend Benfica’s lead, but Mbappé’s second goal brought Madrid back into the contest and set up a tense finale. As Los Blancos pushed for an equaliser, Benfica held firm, even as pressure mounted late on.
Deep into stoppage time, with Real Madrid reduced to nine men after red cards for Raul Ascencio and Rodrygo, Benfica threw everyone forward.
In a remarkable moment, goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin surged into the box and powered home a dramatic header in the eighth minute of added time, sealing Benfica’s place in the playoff round and sending the home crowd into raptures.
Joining Enyeama in exclusive Champions League history
Trubin’s goal placed him in a rare and historic group, as he became only the fifth goalkeeper to score in the Champions League. The exclusive list includes Jörg Butt, Sinan Bolat, Ivan Provedel and Nigerian legend Vincent Enyeama, a name that still resonates strongly with African football fans.
Enyeama previously made history in 2010 when he scored a penalty for Hapoel Tel Aviv against Lyon, becoming one of the few goalkeepers to ever find the net in Europe’s elite competition.
Before Ivan Provedel’s famous late equaliser for Lazio against Atletico Madrid in 2023, it had been 13 years since a goalkeeper had scored in the Champions League.
Now, Trubin’s unforgettable header against Real Madrid adds another chapter to that rare tradition, ensuring his name will forever sit alongside Enyeama and other goalkeeping icons in Champions League folklore.
