The former Super Eagles captain has completed a move to Qatari side Al Ahli SC, leaving a major leadership void at the Saudi Pro League club.

Buckingham hails Troost-Ekong’s leadership

Troost-Ekong joined Al-Kholood from PAOK in the summer of 2024 and quickly established himself as a key figure in the dressing room.

Speaking at a press conference, Buckingham made it clear that replacing the Nigerian international’s influence will be extremely difficult.

“You can't replace William and I am not looking to replace William as a player or a person. There will be somebody that comes in to replace him as a player,” Buckingham told reporters.

The Al-Kholood boss went even further, describing Troost-Ekong as the finest leader he has worked with at the club. “What I mean is, William is by far the best leader of people that I ever had the pleasure of working with at this football club,” he added.

More than just a player for Al-Kholood

Buckingham also highlighted Troost-Ekong’s impact away from the pitch, stressing how important he was in shaping the club’s culture and helping the coach settle into his role.

“He has been a really big part of helping me settle at the club and also making sure the things I have just spoken about with the culture, the environment,” Buckingham said.

The coach concluded by underlining just how deep Troost-Ekong’s legacy runs at Al-Kholood. “He has helped lead and bring the players along that journey. I don't think we could replace William,” he said.

Troost-Ekong leaves after a successful spell, having played a key role in helping Al-Kholood retain their Saudi Pro League status.
