Why Ronaldo will play key role at 2026 World Cup — Portugal boss Roberto Martinez
Roberto Martinez has shared his thoughts on managing the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as why the captain remains a big part of his plans for the 2026 World Cup.
Since taking over the Selecao in January 2023 following the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Spaniard has overseen a period of remarkable consistency and success.

Speaking to the BBC about his career and his time in Lisbon, Martinez emphasized that coaching the 41-year-old is a far simpler task than outsiders might imagine, largely due to the striker's unwavering professionalism.
“It is very easy because he has high standards; he expects the work to be done properly, and he really cares about the game," Martinez explained.
"He really is a perfect example of how someone should act to represent Portugal and the national team."
The former Belgium coach, who led the Red Devils to a bronze medal in 2018 before a group-stage exit in 2022, has revitalized Portugal since succeeding Fernando Santos.
Under Martinez, Portugal have won 27 of 36 matches and lifted the 2025 UEFA Nations League after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Spain last June, the first trophy of the manager's tenure.
Crucially, Martinez insists that Ronaldo’s place in the squad for this summer's World Cup is based on current form rather than his historic reputation.
“Now he’s adjusted, obviously, after spending 21 years in the national team. He’s a goalscorer, he’s a key player for us, and it’s who he is right now that matters to me.
"As a national team coach, a player who has scored 25 goals in the past 30 international matches… It’s not because of what he did before that he’s playing, but because of what he’s doing right now.”
Barring any late injuries, the Al-Nassr star is set to captain his country in North America this summer, seeking the only major trophy that has eluded his storied career.
