Why AFC Leopards and Co Played League Games During International Break as Gor Mahia Enjoyed Free Weekend
FKF Premier League action rolled on through the FIFA international window, but two clubs—record champions Gor Mahia and newly promoted Nairobi United—were conspicuously absent from the fixture list.
Their omission was not accidental. Under FKF Premier League regulations, clubs with two or more players called up for national duty are permitted to request postponement of their league fixtures. While several top-flight teams provided players to the Harambee Stars squad currently in Turkey, only Gor Mahia and Nairobi United met the required threshold.
Gor Mahia, the reigning champions, contributed the largest contingent to Benni McCarthy’s squad, with seven players in camp: goalkeeper Bryne Omondi, defenders Bryton Onyona, Sylvester Owino, Mike Kibwage, Shariff Musa, and midfielders Austin Odhiambo and Alpha Chris Onyango.
Nairobi United—popularly known as Naibois—also crossed the eligibility line with two players on international duty: winger Ovella Ochieng, and fast-rising left-back Kevin Otiende, who recently earned his first senior cap in the friendly against Equatorial Guinea.
Other clubs had only one player each in the national setup, including Kenya Police (Marvin Nabwire), Tusker (Brian Opondo), and Ulinzi Stars (Boniface Muchiri), meaning their league fixtures proceeded as scheduled.

Harambee Stars Set for Senegal Test
The national team is currently in Antalya, Turkey for the November international break. Kenya fell 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea on Friday, November 14, with José Miranda converting a penalty just before halftime after a foul by defender Rooney Onyango.
Next up is a daunting clash against AFCON 2021 champions Senegal on Tuesday, November 18. The two nations last met at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where Senegal claimed a 3–0 victory in Cairo. Nairobi United’s Ovella Ochieng is the only player in the current squad who featured in that match.
With key league fixtures now postponed, Gor Mahia and Nairobi United will return to action once the international window closes and their players rejoin domestic duty.
