Where are they? Nigerians, Africans blast CAF's controversial WAFCON Best XI over missing stars
The release of CAF’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 Best XI has ignited outrage among Nigerian and African football fans, led chiefly by the unexpected omission of Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre.
Despite an impressive tournament that saw Nigeria clinch their historic 10th WAFCON title, Plumptre’s absence from the lineup alongside other key defensive stars has left many questioning CAF’s judgment.
Nigeria’s dominance at WAFCON 2024 was undeniable. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade dazzled throughout, earning the Best Player of the Tournament honor, while Michelle Alozie was a defensive pillar, scoring a crucial semifinal goal.
Esther Okoronkwo emerged as the team’s breakout star, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie’s awe-inspiring saves secured her the Best Goalkeeper award. Yet only these four Super Falcons made the Best XI, to the disbelief of fans.
Criticism flooded social media, reflecting deep frustration with the selection. One fan exclaimed, “Where is Ashleigh Plumptre? She was our best defender and not even included? This isn’t just oversight, it’s a joke!” Another demanded, “The backline should be all Nigerian, Plumptre, Demehin, Alozie, and Ohale deserved their spots!”
The sentiment was unanimous: “You can’t leave out a central defender who conceded only three goals throughout the tournament. This list ignores the backbone of our defense!” and “Only one Super Falcon in the Best XI, after such a dominant campaign? Nonsense!”

Plumptre, known for her tenacity and leadership on the backline, had become a fan favourite and a crucial figure in Nigeria’s “Mission X” quest. Her omission raised serious doubts about CAF’s criteria.
One supporter passionately noted, “Plumptre stepped up when it mattered most. To ignore her is to disregard the very foundation of our success!”
This backlash reflects not only the passionate engagement of fans but also a broader call for fairness and recognition of unsung heroes who do not always grab headlines but are vital to victory.
The exclusion of Plumptre and others has cast a shadow over CAF’s Best XI credibility, prompting fans to demand transparency in how players are honoured.
