‘When my Netflix documentary comes out, the story will be told’ — Mourinho claims Man City should be stripped of 2018 title
Jose Mourinho has taken fresh aim at Manchester City and Manchester United’s leadership, suggesting City should be stripped of the 2018 Premier League title.
In a wide-ranging interview with Canal 11, Mourinho also criticised Jim Ratcliffe’s handling of United and reflected on his own turbulent time at Old Trafford.
Mourinho reignites 2018 title debate, targets FFP loopholes
Currently coaching Turkish side Fenerbahce, Mourinho believes Manchester United deserved the 2018 Premier League crown due to Manchester City’s financial fair play breaches.
He expressed frustration with how such punishments are enforced, insisting that clubs “should pay points” rather than monetary fines.
Manchester United finished second that season under Mourinho, their highest Premier League placing since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, but the Portuguese manager still feels justice was not served.
“Manchester City was punished, and legally, we should have won the league,” he said. He hinted that his full account of that season will be revealed in an upcoming Netflix documentary, teasing, “When my Netflix documentary comes out, the story will be told.”
Mourinho criticises Ratcliffe and backs Ruben Amorim
Mourinho also critiqued Manchester United’s post-Ferguson leadership, pinpointing the exit of David Gill alongside Ferguson’s retirement as pivotal.
He described United’s new ownership under Sir Jim Ratcliffe as lacking football experience. On Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s current manager, Mourinho reflected on his struggles after joining mid-season, guiding the team to a historic low of 15th place.
Still, he acknowledged Amorim’s potential and praised the decision to show faith in him. “He’s a manager with great potential and personality,” Mourinho said, expressing hope that stability could help Amorim succeed where others have failed.
