The Red Devils started October with a victory after picking up only one win in September. They beat the Black Cats 2-0, thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško in the first half.

What Amorim said

The Manchester-based side have struggled this season, managing only two league wins before today. Prior to the game at Old Trafford this afternoon, Amorim admitted that his side needed results quickly to keep their project alive

United got both of their goals in the first half, and for the second 45, they were steely, determined to keep the result, and Amorim praised that maturity in game management.

"That is the kind of game where when we're not playing well, we're defending well," he said, per the BBC. “We had our moments; we were focused and competitive. Not the perfect performance.”

Manchester United have had goalkeeping problems that stretch back to David De Gea's final years at the club, with Andre Onana proving an inadequate replacement.

The Cameroon international left this summer, on loan to Trabzonspor, and was replaced by Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

The Belgian has had to bide his time, with Altay Bayindir keeping his place between the sticks until today. Lammens was excellent, making three saves and two high claims, attracting praise from Amorim.

“Senne [Lammens] did really well. We were a competitive and adult team today. We need to win these games with a clean sheet. Good for us.”

"We need to understand that we need everyone to be ready to play. It's a long season, we have a lot of problems, anything can happen. The important thing is that the teammates helped Lammens a lot to have a very good performance."
