‘We had to do it for T’ - Forest captain reveals why he dedicated goal to injured Awoniyi
The Super Eagles star missed Forest's 2-1 victory against West Ham on Sunday afternoon after undergoing surgery.
Forest took the lead in the first half thanks to a goal from Gibbs-White, who celebrated by dedicating it to Awoniyi.
Awoniyi sustained a ruptured intestine after a severe collision with the goalpost during Nottingham Forest's 2-2 draw against Leicester City.
What Gibbs-White said
After the game, Gibbs-White explained that the forward motivated their team's victory over Graham Potter's side.
“It's incredible, especially with how this past week has gone and with everything that's happened, we knew we had to do it for T today, and the three points today were for him.
“He's on a good road to recovery now, everything went well as can be, and that performance out there was for him.
“He gave us a nice message before the game and that was nice to see, saying that he's right behind us and yes, it's been a a really difficult week to take but we're delighted with the three points and even more happy that he's okay,” the England midfielder said in his post-match interview.
In support of their injured teammate Taiwo Awoniyi, Nottingham Forest players wore shirts with the message "We're all with you, Taiwo" before their match against West Ham United at the London Stadium.
The gesture from Nuno Espírito Santo's team aimed to boost Awoniyi's spirits and aid in his recovery.
