Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has come to the defense of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali following widespread criticism after Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 win over Rwanda in their 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Nwabali was in goal from start to finish as the Super Eagles under Eric Chelle kept their World Cup alive against the Amavubi of Rwanda in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Despite securing three crucial points with a second-half goal from substitute Tolu Arokodare at Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Nwabali faced backlash from Nigerian fans on social media.

The Chippa United goalkeeper, praised for his performances during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, was criticised for controversial actions during the match, including heated exchanges with Rwandan players and what many viewed as rash decisions inside the box.

Troost-Ekong says Nwabali is important to Nigeria's Super Eagles.

Supporters expressed frustration on his antics which they believe were unnecessary, particularly since there was no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to review potentially punishable incidents.

However, Troost-Ekong, who was on the bench for the Rwanda game, made it clear Nigeria heavily relies on Nwabali and insisted he remains the undisputed number one for the team ahead of the crucial clash against South Africa.

Stanley Nwabali has been Nigeria's number one since AFCON 2023.

“Nwabali is our Number 1, of course we can’t do without him,” Troost-Ekong affirmed, via a post by Nigerian journalist OJBSports, highlighting the goalkeeper’s importance to the Super Eagles as they prepare for the decisive upcoming qualifier.

Nigeria sit third in Group C, one point behind Benin Republic and six adrift of leaders South Africa, who host the Super Eagles in a must-win game for the Nigerians on Tuesday.

As staed by Troost-Ekong, the Eagles will be counting on Nwabali to keep the Bafana Bafana at bay, with Nigerians also hoping the number one can reduce any risks that would cost the Eagles darely in the rainbow nation.
