‘We are really sorry for this’ — Brazil manager apologises as Arsenal defender suffers injury blow
Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has issued an apology after Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes picked up an adductor injury during Brazil’s friendly win over Senegal.
The setback comes at a terrible time for the Gunners, who are heading into a defining stretch of the season with major fixtures on the horizon.
Ancelotti confirms injury and expresses regret
Gabriel was forced off after feeling discomfort, prompting concern on both the Brazil and Arsenal benches. When asked about the severity of the problem, Ancelotti admitted that little was known yet but confirmed the issue was significant enough to require medical evaluation.
“Bad? I don’t know, he had a problem on his adductor the medical staff have to check tomorrow,” the Brazil manager said.
He went on to apologise, adding, “We are really sorry for this, really disappointed when players have an injury, I hope they can recover well and soon.”
The injury is particularly worrying for Arsenal, given Gabriel’s importance in Mikel Arteta’s defensive structure.
Alongside William Saliba, he forms one of the Premier League’s most reliable centre-back pairings, and losing him disrupts Arsenal’s rhythm at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Arsenal face defensive concerns ahead of crucial fixtures
With the North London Derby just over a week away, the timing could hardly be worse, and the bad news does not stop with Gabriel. Riccardo Calafiori is also dealing with a hip issue picked up before joining Italy’s camp, and reports indicate he may return to Arsenal early.
That leaves Arteta potentially without two starters from his usual back four at a moment when squad depth will be tested to its limits.
Fortunately, William Saliba and Jurrien Timber emerged unharmed from international duty with France and the Netherlands, respectively, but Arsenal may still be forced into reshuffling their defensive options.
Arteta could turn to youngsters like Myles Lewis-Skelly or rely on summer signing Piero Hincapié if needed, but neither solution offers the stability Gabriel provides.
The timing only raises the stakes: after the derby with Tottenham, Arsenal move straight into clashes with Bayern Munich and Chelsea in what may be the most demanding week of their season.
