Despite Al-Ahli’s convincing 3-1 win to kick off their 2023/24 season, Mendy’s first game for the club will be remembered for being stained by a worryingly familiar error.
The Senegalese goalkeeper was trusted with a back pass to help his team recycle possession, but could only watch in horror as his pass failed to find a teammate, instead, the ball found its way to Al Hazem’s Vina, who lobbed Mendy to score.
Vina’s goal brought the scores to 2-1, leaving Al-Ahli with a tricky lead to protect, but hang on they did to see out a 3-1 victory.
Firmino shines despite Mendy error
Mendy was not the Al-Ahli summer signing to make his debut, as other former Premier League stars, including Riyad Mahrez, Alain Saint-Maximin, and Roberto Firmino all made their official debuts for the club.
Firmino was the star of the 3-1 win for Al-Ahli, scoring a remarkable hat-trick to seal all three points for his new club.
All three former Premier League forwards combined for Al-Ahli’s second goal, giving a hint of what the club’s fans can expect during an exciting campaign.
