Otieno, who was recently released by Kenya Police after clinching their maiden FKF Premier League title, has seen his brother grow to the level where he is right now as one of the most talented creators playing in the local league, and whose impact is being felt at international level.

Odhiambo has been earning plaudits even amongst non football fans not just in Kenya, but across Africa, as his historic goal gave Kenya their first-ever CHAN win on home soil, which subsequently made each of his teammates a million shillings richer courtesy of President William Ruto.

Speaking in a very recent interview, Otieno, who learnt his footballing ropes at Baba Dogo grounds, just like his brother, expressed delight at having seen his brother reach the heights that he has.

“I thank God his career peaked because no one knows him better than I do. Any time I see him, I feel very proud of him, and I have never even told him,” Otieno said during an appearance on the TikiTaka Show.

“I love how he has taken his career seriously and it is taking him far. We spend a lot of time together on the pitch and he is a role model to others here.”

Otieno also praised Austin’s humility and community spirit despite his rising stardom.

“He has not put his interests above the society’s despite his experience. He even finds himself arguing with the little boys in the neighborhood. The boys learn a lot from him and it makes them realise that fulfilling their dreams is possible.”

“I love my brother and I wish him all the best, but I believe that God’s timing is the best. The most important thing is to make sure his career keeps progressing.”

From Babadogo to Harambee Stars Hero

Odhiambo’s football journey began at the Baba Dogo grounds in Nairobi, where he developed alongside his brother. He was scouted by then AFC Cubs coach Boniface Ambani in 2016 and caught the eye during the KPL U-20 tournament at Camp Toyoyo, Jericho.

Although he initially struggled to break into the AFC Leopards senior team, Odhiambo made his breakthrough in the 2019 season, which eventually led to a call-up to the national team. He later joined Gor Mahia in 2021, replacing Kenneth Muguna, who had moved to Azam FC.

Known for his creativity, dribbling, and vision, Odhiambo has established himself as one of the premier playmakers in the FKF Premier League. His impressive performances in the 2023–24 season earned him the Most Valuable Player award at the FKF Gala in July 2024.

He made his senior international debut in 2024 and found the net during the COSAFA Cup, further solidifying his place in the national squad.

Dubbed “Rolls-Royce” by fans and commentators, Odhiambo’s technical prowess, quick decision-making, and composure under pressure have made him a fan favorite and a beacon of hope for Kenyan football.

As Kenya continues its CHAN 2024 journey, Odhiambo’s contributions — and the pride they bring to those close to him — underline the deeper significance of football in the country: not just as a sport, but as a dream being realized, one goal at a time.
