‘VAR should have reviewed for violent conduct’ - Ex-EPL referee claims Super Eagles star was lucky not to be sent off
Crystal Palace lost their first game of the new season, a 2-1 loss to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.
An incident that happened during the game in question occurred late in the match, shortly after Uche was substituted on in the 89th minute.
The Nigerian international appeared to jab Everton defender James Tarkowski in the stomach, prompting a VAR review for potential violent conduct, which was cleared with no further action.
How Uche escaped FA punishment
Following the incident, Clattenburg, who was once a Premier League referee, shared his expert opinion on the matter.
"Christantus Uche is unlikely to face any retrospective action after appearing to punch James Tarkowski on Sunday," Clattenburg explained.
"The incident would have been checked by VAR and deemed not worthy of a red card. The Football Association do not re-referee matches when incidents are seen by the match officials, which now includes VAR.
“I do believe, however, that the VAR should have recommended a review for a red card for violent conduct."
Tarkowski’s minimal reaction to the contact may have influenced the decision. A more dramatic response from the Everton defender could have led VAR to recommend a dismissal, which would have resulted in a three-match suspension for Uche.
