Usain Bolt Provides Fitness Update After His Recent 'I Get Out of Breath’ Admission
Legendary sprinter Usain Bolt has provided a fitness update following an admission last year that left fans surprised.
Bolt, regarded as the greatest sprinter of all time, said last September that he was struggling to even walk up the stairs after an Achilles rapture in the summer of 2024 that left him in bad shape.
The 100m and 200m world record holder had raptured his Achilles while playing in a charity football match and as he was continuing his recovery he could no longer run as that would leave him out of breath.
“I mostly do gym workouts. I’m not a fan, but I think now that I’ve been out for a while, I have to actually start running because, when I walk up stairs, I get out of breath,” Bolt said on the sidelines of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in September.
“I think when I start working on it fully again, I will probably have to do some laps just to get my breathing right.”
Why Bolt Hates Long Runs
That surprised many given Bolt’s sprinting prowess during his storied career. However, over three months later, the 39-year-old has set the record straight while expressing delight that he has made great progress on his fitness.
“It was a joke I made that was taken a little out of context but I have been back in training and my Achilles is much better now,” Bolt told The National.
Bolt also went into details over why sprinters like him do not do long runs.
“I was a sprinter and rarely ran long distances. Distance running is like a different sport to sprinting. I don’t really run like that. I prefer cycling or football for cardio,” he added.
Bolt was speaking in Saudi Arabia when he attended the Riyadh derby between a Cristiano Ronaldo-led Al Nassr and Al Hilal, which the latter won 3-1.
