Multiple world and Olympics champion Noah Lyles has still not lost his desire to break both the 100m and 200m held by Jamaican legend Usain Bolt.

Bolt has held the 100m world record of 9.58 seconds and the 200m record of 19.19 seconds since 2009 with several sprinters attempting and failing.

Those who have tried and failed include Lyles, with the American down in 13th position in the 100m all-time list with his time of 9.79 seconds, recorded at the Paris 2024 Olympics in August last year.

It is, however, in the 200m where he is knocking on the door as he has the third fastest time in history of 19.31 seconds, behind Bolt (19.19) and Jamaican Yohan Blake (19.26), after clocking it in Eugene in July 2022.

Lyles Keeps Faith in World Record Attempt

Lyles had promised to lower both records at the 2023 World Championships but failed and did not come close either at the 2024 Olympics or 2025 World Championships, but remains confident.

“The 200m is the closest in sight,” Lyles told The Times of India regarding which world record he feels is within reach.

“Running 19.31 seconds and being the third-fastest human makes it easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But I do not see a reason not to keep pushing in both.”

Lyles has shrugged off any pressure on him during his races and focuses on his execution and not on achieving certain times as he feels it is the best way to hit his targets.

The 28-year-old became the first man since Bolt to win four straight world titles in 200m and will be looking to maintain his great record in the 2026 season.
