As Slavia Prague prepare for their Champions League meeting with Premier League leaders Arsenal, Harambee Stars midfielder Timothy Ouma is among those thinking what could have been.

The Czech giants host the Gunners in the Champions League on Tuesday night in what is one of their biggest games, hoping to stop Mikel Arteta’s in-form side.

However, Ouma will be among those watching from far as the action unfolds yet he would have been among those lining up at Fortuna Arena had things gone differently for him.

Ouma joined Slavia Prague in January this year, when he left Elfsborg in a deal worth around Ksh473 million, hoping to hit the ground running, having starred for the Swedish club and even played for them in last season’s Europa League.

However, he endured a frustrating four months, when he had to contend with a spell in the second-string side, making just one senior appearance, coming at the tail end of the season, when the league title was already won and nothing much to play for.

Following that frustrating spell, a decision was made to let him move out on a season-long loan, joining Polish giants Lech Poznan, where he has since become an integral player.

However, there is a feeling of regret from the player and his camp that Slavia Prague were not patient with him or trusted him to slot in straight into their senior team, having shelled out such a huge sum and signed him when his stock was high in Sweden.

That will therefore deny Ouma a chance to play against Arsenal in the Champions League as he will have to watch from a distance as his parent club square it off with the Gunners, when he would have been among those showcasing their skills on the biggest stage against one of the world’s top teams.

It is a missed opportunity but the midfielder will be hoping to continue his impressive run in Poland to win the trust of his parent club so that he can be integrated into the team for a possible Champions League challenge next season.

Ouma has so far made 19 appearances for Lech Poznan, 10 in the league, and eight in European competitions.
