Okoye's 2025-26 campaign was initially delayed by a six-match suspension for a betting-related offence.

Upon his return, the former Watford keeper was swiftly reinstalled as Udinese's number one, securing four clean sheets in his subsequent fourteen appearances.

The goalkeeper also faced international disappointment. After being named in Nigeria's provisional squad for the recent Africa Cup of Nations, he was a notable omission from the final 28-man roster that travelled to Morocco.

Brunner advises Okoye

Speaking on "Udinese Tonight," Brunner acknowledged the difficulties Okoye has faced but insisted they cannot be an excuse for his development.

"Off-the-pitch vicissitudes certainly haven’t helped him," Brunner stated. "This shouldn’t be an excuse, but progress is not automatic. It takes time."

Brunner highlighted Okoye's rare combination of size and agility, describing him as a "gift from nature" with all the necessary tools to succeed.

"He's an impressive physical talent. He has everything it takes to become a great goalkeeper," the coach explained.

"It's unusual for a goalkeeper who stands 1.96 meters tall to have these physical qualities; he's very quick, even in low saves."

The coach also noted the mental toll of playing in Italy, where criticism can be intense. "In Italy, when you make a mistake, the criticism is fierce; he suffers internally without ever showing it," Brunner added.

To reinforce the need for consistent effort, Brunner revealed that Okoye was benched for the matchday 18 fixture against Como as a reminder that his place in the starting lineup must be earned and is never guaranteed.
