They are making it Messi League Soccer — Ex-USMNT star accuses MLS of bias
Former USMNT star Herculez Gomez has accused Major League Soccer of overcommitting into the Lionel Messi project, thereby ignoring the core fans of the league.
Lionel Messi was recently suspended by the league's commission after he missed the All-Star Game. His absence and subsequent fury at the league have sparked conversations about how much of the MLS project is Messi-focused.
For former LA Galaxy star Gomez, the league is too Messi-centric, and the hardcore fans of the league are getting turned off by it.
What he said
“Nobody should be above the law, but when MLS puts all their eggs in one basket, they’ve made it very clear who is above the law," Gomez said.
"I'm here to talk about the pushback. It seems like the hardcore MLS fans they've taken this stance of 'F-Messi; he's been bad for the league. It's not Messi league soccer; this is Major League Soccer.'
"It’s Messi this, Messi that….and they’re fed up with it and I sympathize and almost relate to it. But don't for a second, think Major League Soccer has your best interest at heart.
“They don't. They’ve got your money, they want the casual fans and the casual fan wants Messi... This is a the way they've operated and you should not be surprised."
Meanwhile, Messi's time in the league might be coming to an end, and he continues to stall on the contract extension proposal from Inter Miami. However, with the recent signing of his friend and national teammate Rodrigo de Paul, it is highly likely that Messi will put pen to paper soon.
