AFCON 2025: The spirit is strong — Troost-Ekong backs Super Eagles to make Nigerians proud
Eric Chelle's men take on Algeria in a highly-anticipated quarter-final clash, having won all four of their matches, highlighted by a dominant 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16.
The Riyad Mahrez-led Desert Warriors of Algeria, have been equally formidable, boasting an unblemished run and the tournament's best defence.
For Troost-Ekong, the tournament is a bittersweet experience. The ex-Watford centre-back, who announced his international retirement in December just before the competition began, would have been a key part of the squad in Morocco.
His decision concluded a distinguished decade-long career with the national team, where he was a respected leader and captain.
Despite watching from the sidelines, Troost-Ekong is filled with optimism about the team's performance.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Troost-Ekong shared his thoughts on retiring from international duty and his pride in seeing the team succeed.
"December was a deeply personal and emotional month for me, as I officially stepped away from international football after 10 unforgettable years representing Nigeria," he wrote.
"To have worn the green and white for a decade, and to have captained my country, is something I will carry with pride for the rest of my life. Every cap, every anthem, every moment of struggle and celebration meant something far beyond football.
"However, as one chapter closes, my support for the Super Eagles will never fade," he continued.
"Watching Nigeria complete a perfect group-stage campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and then advance to the upcoming quarter-finals, playing with hunger, personality and belief, filled me with pride.
"The talent is there, the spirit is strong, and I have no doubt the team will continue to inspire millions back home."
