Super Eagles star finds new home: Former Liverpool coach rescues Iheanacho with 12-month career lifeline
Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has secured a fresh start after former Liverpool and Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers stepped in to sign him on a 12-month contract with Celtic, following the early termination of his contract with Sevilla.
Sevilla officially announced on social media as reported by Pulse Sports the mutual termination of Iheanacho’s contract, which was originally set to run until June 2026.
The Nigerian striker, who joined the Spanish club in 2024 from Leicester City, made 11 appearances and scored three goals across competitions before being loaned out to Middlesbrough in January.
At Middlesbrough, he played 15 Championship matches, netting one goal and providing two assists.
However, under Sevilla manager MatÃas Almeyda, Iheanacho fell out of favour and was excluded from the club’s opening three La Liga matchday squads this season, leading to the early contract termination.
Within just three days of his release, Celtic came to Iheanacho’s rescue, handing him a lifeline with a one-year contract, with an option to extend for an additional year.
The club announced the signing on their official X platform, with a further statement on its website, expressing delight at the deal pending international clearance.
Iheanacho, 28, began his career in Europe at Manchester City, where he spent two years and earned a League Cup winner’s medal.
He then moved to Leicester City, making over 200 appearances under Brendan Rodgers, with whom he reunited at Celtic.
During his time at Leicester, Iheanacho was part of the squad that won the FA Cup in 2021.
This move to Celtic marks a promising new chapter for Iheanacho as he looks to revive his career under the guidance of a familiar and trusted coach.
