Despite being included in Eric Chelle's 54-man provisional list for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football.

The Al-Kholood star, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2023 AFCON, made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) with a video and emotional caption pledging his loyalty to Nigeria beyond his playing days.

Ekong’s emotional farewell after 83 caps

In his heartfelt message, Troost-Ekong wrote, “HONOURED. GRATEFUL. FOREVER A SUPER EAGLE. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter.”

The announcement ends a remarkable international run that saw him earn 83 caps in 10 years, lead Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON final, and establish himself as one of the most respected figures in the squad.

However, Ekong’s role had shifted in recent months. The emergence of 20-year-old Benjamin Fredrick pushed him out of the starting XI, reducing the captain to a bench role.

Ndidi tipped to take over from Ekong

Troost-Ekong also confirmed that he was slated to take a penalty in the shootout against DR Congo, but being left on the bench prevented him from stepping up.

Despite his disappointment, he dismissed any frustration, saying, “I wasn’t frustrated; I just wanted to win this game… My role is to support the team as much as possible, both on and off the pitch.”

As Nigeria prepares for AFCON 2025, attention now shifts to new leadership. Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has endorsed Wilfred Ndidi as Ekong’s successor, noting that the Besiktas midfielder has captained the team in recent games and enjoys full respect within the squad.

“With AFCON so close,” Oliseh said, “nobody doubts the respect the players have for Ndidi. And he's a player that plays every game.”

Troost-Ekong leaves the Super Eagles with his legacy intact. Admired, respected, and forever part of Nigeria’s football history.
