According to reports by AFP, the China-based player has been "questioned by the public security authorities in Liaoning province while in detention”.

The report cited an unidentified official at the South Korean Embassy in Beijing.

Seoul's foreign ministry could not immediately confirm the report, a ministry representative told AFP.

According to further reports by Reuters, Son was currently in the custody of the Liaoning Public Security Department in connection to a bribery case, according to an official at South Korea's consulate-general in Shenyang.

He appeared in three of South Korea's four matches at last year's FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He currently plays for the South Korean national team and Chinese Super League club Shandong Taishan, based in the northeastern province of Shandong.
