South Africa Outclass Kenya Lionesses in Rugby Africa Women 7s Final to Retain Crown
In a commanding display of skill and dominance, South Africa retained their Rugby Africa Women’s 7s title with a comprehensive 22-0 victory over the Kenya Lionesses in the gold medal final. at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
The match started with intense competition, but it was clear early on that the Springbok Women were in control.
Despite a tight opening phase and a brief injury stoppage for Kenya’s Janet Okello—who was substituted by Edith Nariaka two minutes before halftime—South Africa struck first just before the break.
Shiniqua Lamprecht’s try gave the visitors a crucial lead going into halftime.
South Africa Dominate Second Half
South Africa quickly built on their momentum in the second half. Simamquele Namba’s powerful run resulted in the team’s second try, extending the lead to 12-0.
The home crowd was silenced when Patience Mokene added a third try, making it 17-0, followed by Nadine Roos who sealed the victory with a final try at 22-0.
The win was the culmination of a strong tournament for South Africa, who started by thrashing Ghana 48-0 in the quarterfinals and followed up with a 29-0 semifinal win over Madagascar.
On the other side, Kenya’s journey to the final saw them overcoming Zimbabwe 33-12 in the quarterfinals and edging Uganda 17-10 in a hard-fought semifinal match.
The final standings saw South Africa on top, with Kenya earning the silver medal. Uganda secured bronze after beating Madagascar 38-12.
Other notable results from the tournament included Madagascar’s 17-7 victory over Zambia, Tunisia narrowly edging Zambia 19-14 for fifth place, and Zimbabwe clinching seventh place by defeating Ghana 19-12.
South Africa’s retention of the Women’s 7s crown highlights their continued dominance in African rugby, and they will be looking to carry this form into future international competitions.
