With his time, he smashed Christian Miller's previous U18 world record of 10.06s, and he's now the fastest Japanese this season.
Shimizu has shown tremendous progress this year, first winning the Asian U18 Championships in 10.38s, after running then PB of 10.28s in the semifinals.
Not resting on his laurels, at the Japanese Championships in May, the youngster lowered his PB to 10.19s to finish second in his heat race, but couldn't replicate a faster performance in the semifinals as he finished fourth and lost out on a final spot.
Shimizu's meteoric rise this year speaks highly of his talent as he's now highly rated as a future Olympic and world 100m medallist for Japan.
In the history of the event, Japan has achieved 1 OG and 1 WC finalist each and no championship medals. Not one.

4 adult individuals have broken 10.00, yet oddly caved in when it counted most. https://t.co/P3a9jvdzY0
He also now sits joint fourth on Japan's all-time list behind Ryota YAMAGATA (9.95s), Abdul Hakim SANI BROWN (9.96s), Yoshihide KIRYU (9.98s), and Yuki KOIKE (9.98s).
