‘She's got a bit of a big mouth’ - Roy Keane takes jibe at the wife of new Man United manager Michael Carrick
Michael and Lisa Carrick, who have been together since their school days, married in 2007 and have two children.
The former Man United player was recently appointed as the interim manager of the Red Devils following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
Carrick takes on the high-pressure job at Old Trafford until the end of the season, aiming to secure Champions League qualification. He will have the support of his wife of 29 years.
What Keane said
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, the 54-year-old pundit made the pointed remark while discussing Carrick's new role at Manchester United.
"His wife can always come in [if Carrick doesn't do well], 'cause she's got a bit of a big mouth sometimes. She's probably doing the team talk," Keane commented.
The jibe reopened a dispute that began in 2014. Following a 2-0 Champions League loss to Olympiacos, Keane, then a TV pundit, criticised Carrick's post-match interview.
"That interview was just like the performance, flat," Keane said at the time. "He should say a bit more and have a bit more urgency, even in the interview."
Lisa Carrick, then Lisa Roughead, reacted angrily on Twitter (now X), writing: "Roy Keane, what a [...], says anything to provoke a reaction." She quickly deleted the post, adding, "Deleted my tweet... Emotions got the better of me."
"At Sunderland, I didn’t speak to the players for about two days when I went in. Just watched training. Keep them all guessing," he explained.
"You don’t have to do a big speech, that’s all very predictable. I thought I’d give them a couple of days just to chill out."
It was immediately after this story that Keane made the unexpected segue to criticise Carrick's wife.
