Sha'Carri Richardson risks jail term following fresh arrest
Following Sha'Carri Richardson's fresh arrest in Florida, the American sprint queen now risks jail term if some coonditions aren't met.
The 25-year-old was arrested on Thursday, after being accused of over speeding. She was pulled over for driving at more than 100 mph and taken into custody under Florida’s recently introduced “super speeder” law.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Richardson was driving at 104 mph, dangerously tailgating and weaving across lanes to pass other vehicles. She was taken into custody and booked into the Orange County jail on a $500 bond.
Under a new Florida law enacted on July 1, driving 50 mph over the speed limit or at speeds exceeding 100 mph is a serious offense. A first-time conviction can result in up to 30 days in jail or a $500 fine. A second offense carries a potential 90-day jail term or a $1,000 fine, and a second conviction within five years triggers a minimum 180-day license revocation.
This incident marks another off-track controversy for the celebrated athlete. In August 2025, she was arrested following a domestic assault on her boyfriend Christian Coleman at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Coleman declined to press charges, and she later issued a public apology.
Richardson has been one of the most dominant and famous track and field stars in the past five years. She became the world 100m champion in Budapest three years ago and secured a silver medal in the 100m and 4x100m relay gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
