Ryan Ogam: Harambee Stars Striker's Wolfsberger AC Struggles Raise AFCON 2027 Concerns
Harambee Stars striker Ryan Ogam’s meteoric rise has hit its first significant speed bump in Europe.
Since his high-profile move from Tusker FC to Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC in September 2025, the forward has found himself navigating the unfamiliar and frustrating territory of the substitutes' bench.
While his talent remains undisputed, the timing of this benching crisis is particularly concerning as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fast approaches.
Ryan Ogam: From Local Hero to European Struggles
After a prolific stint at Tusker FC, where he scored 15 goals in just 17 appearances, Ryan Ogam became one of the most sought-after talents in East Africa.
His performances for Harambee Stars, particularly his match-winning strikes against Morocco and Zambia during the 2024 African Nations tournament, solidified his reputation as the heir apparent to Michael Olunga.
However, the transition to the Austrian top flight has proven challenging. Since joining Wolfsberger AC, Ryan Ogam has struggled to secure a spot in the starting eleven.
While he has made cameo appearances, including a debut against Grazer AK, he has yet to establish himself as a regular starter. For a player who was used to being the first name on the team sheet in Nairobi, the current lack of game time is a stark reality check.
Ryan Ogam: Managing Life in Austria
Despite the limited minutes, Ryan Ogam remains focused on the process of adaptation. Speaking on the professional gap and his personal growth, Ogam noted: "Life has been great. I'm still trying to adapt to the weather because it's really cold, but everything is okay and getting better by the day. What stands out is the structure and professionalism.
“They've really put their systems together compared to Kenya. We are trying, but the level there is much higher, and that also comes with discipline."
He has also set a firm target of 10 goals for his debut season, maintaining that once the first goal goes in, "the rest will follow."
Ryan Ogam’s Situation Places Benni McCarthy in a Critical Situation
The crisis at Wolfsberger AC puts Benni McCarthy in a difficult position. While the coach values Ryan Ogam’s loyalty and past performances, a striker who isn't playing regularly risks losing the sharp edge required for international football.
For a coach building a squad capable of competing at the highest level, the lack of competitive rhythm for one of his key assets is a growing headache.
The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. With AFCON 2027, which Kenya will co-host, fast approaching, the national team needs its best players at the peak of their powers.
If the situation at Wolfsberger AC does not improve, Ryan Ogam may need to consider his options to ensure he remains match-fit.
For Kenya to make an impact in 2027, they need the Ryan Ogam who dominated the FKF Premier League, not a version of the player relegated to the sidelines in Europe.
