Rúben Amorim will coach us one day — Iberian politician eyes Man United boss
João Noronha Lopes, a candidate for Benfica's presidency in the club elections scheduled for October 25th, attended an event in Évora this Saturday. He was accompanied by Nuno Gomes, a former Benfica player and the vice-president for football on Noronha Lopes' ticket.
When asked about the possibility of Rúben Amorim becoming Benfica's coach, Nuno Gomes received an ovation from the attending fans following his response. "Rúben Amorim is the manager of Manchester United, so I can't answer that question. One thing I'm certain of, though, is that Rúben Amorim will be Benfica's coach one day," the former striker stated in an interview with CMTV.
Nuno Gomes also elaborated on his reasons for supporting João Noronha Lopes' candidacy. "Above all, I believe in a competent individual who has already demonstrated his management capabilities. He is a serious man, exactly what Benfica needs right now for a change. Benfica requires a paradigm shift, new and different people. And João [Noronha Lopes] has shown in recent years that he is capable of changing Benfica, of making Benfica greater and different from what it has been in recent years."
Regarding Benfica's 1-1 draw with Santa Clara the previous day, Nuno Gomes expressed regret and issued a warning: "We are sad; dropping points at home is always bad. Benfica always plays to win all three points. We felt the difficulty, which in my opinion, dates back to last season, of playing against opponents with a low block.
"Most of Benfica's games are played under these circumstances, with opponents who defend and try to counter-attack, and Benfica once again failed to outwit the defensive system set up by Vasco Matos. Benfica, with the players it has, must also be different on the field.
"Despite being early in the season and despite all the circumstances, with players on international duty, some returning earlier than others, some arriving almost at game time, Benfica, with the investment made, must have the capacity to defeat Santa Clara at home."
