Rossoneri star emulates Liberian legend George Weah during Milan derby win
AC Milan ended their dismal run of six consecutive Derby della Madonnina defeats with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Inter Milan.
Christian Pulisic and Matteo Gabbia’s goals sealed the win, but the defender’s last-minute strike has now made him a Rossoneri folk hero.
Gabbia's late winner stuns favourites Inter
Despite entering the derby as underdogs, Milan took the lead through Christian Pulisic, who weaved his way through Inter’s defence just 10 minutes into the game to score a brilliant solo goal.
Although Inter equalised through Federico Dimarco, big saves from both goalkeepers kept the match level before the late decider.
Gabbia broke Nerazzurri hearts with a late header, leaping highest to meet Tijani Reijnders’ inch-perfect cross to claim a famous victory for the visitors.
Gabbia ties George Weah
Gabbia’s goal in the 89th minute not only helped Milan overcome their fierce Derby rivals but also wrote the Italian defender’s name into Rossoneri’s history books alongside one of the club’s all-time greats.

The winning goal for Milan over Inter by Gabbia was the first time the Milan derby was settled in favour of the Rossoneri that late this century.
The last time a decider was scored that late for the Rossoneri in the Milan derby was in October 1999, when Liberian Ballon d’Or winner George Weah struck an 89th-minute winner against Inter.
After a run of one win in their opening five matches of the season, Milan will be hoping that the record breaking win is the turning point for their 2024/25 campaign, which has been underwhelming so far.
