Report: PSG reject Chelsea bid for Nigerian midfield maverick

Paris Saint-Germain Féminine have rejected a January bid from Chelsea for Nigerian midfielder Jennifer Echegini, keeping the highly rated Super Falcons star firmly in Paris as the winter transfer window heats up across Europe.

The decision shows PSG are keen to maintain squad stability while chasing major honours domestically after crashing out of Europe during a demanding stretch of the season.

French reports from Le Parisien say Chelsea made a formal approach this month, hoping to tempt Echegini with a move to England. PSG quickly shut down talks, viewing the 24-year-old as a vital part of their midfield plans. 

She arrived in July 2024 on a three-year deal and has settled fast, adding control, energy, and invention. Coaches value her ability to carry the ball, link play, and handle pressure in big matches. 

With the title race tight and European fixtures looming, PSG prefer continuity over disruption. Selling a growing influence midseason would weaken balance and rhythm. 

For Chelsea, the rejection ends hopes of a swift deal before the February deadline. Sources close to the clubs suggest discussions never advanced beyond initial contact stages.

Echegini’s rise has also been driven by her exploits with Nigeria, where she keeps delivering on the biggest stages. 

She scored the winning goal in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, sealing a historic tenth title for the Super Falcons. 

That moment boosted her profile across Europe and caught attention in England. PSG see a midfielder comfortable with responsibility, tempo, and chance creation. 

As the English window closes on 3 February, time is against Chelsea. PSG are instead locked in on league success after exiting Europe at the first stage.
