The PSG defender is said to be struggling mentally after the loss, prompting the club to take a cautious approach with his return to training.

PSG manage Hakimi’s return after AFCON heartbreak

According to reports from Le Parisien, PSG are keeping Hakimi’s reintegration into training discreet, with the coaching staff aware that the Moroccan international is not yet back to his best mental state.

Manager Luis Enrique is understood to be fully aware of the situation and has decided to keep the right-back on the sidelines for now.

Hakimi missed PSG’s recent 1-0 victory over Auxerre and is also expected to sit out the upcoming Champions League clash against Newcastle.

The decision reflects PSG’s desire to protect the player as he processes the disappointment of losing the AFCON final on home soil.

AFCON final loss and contrasting PSG situations

Hakimi was part of Morocco’s squad that finished as runners-up at AFCON 2025, losing the final to Senegal, led by his PSG teammate Ibrahim Mbaye.

While Mbaye has already returned to training and even started in PSG’s win over Auxerre, Hakimi’s slower return highlights the different ways players are coping with the aftermath of the tournament.

The situation is made more complex by the fact that Hakimi was controversially named in the AFCON 2025 Team of the Tournament, despite missing the start of the competition due to an injury that initially threatened to rule him out entirely.

For now, PSG appear content to prioritise the Moroccan defender’s mental wellbeing over rushing him back into action.
