REPORT: Eric Chelle betrayed Super Eagles, applied for new job while under contract with Nigeria
Eric Chelle reportedly applied for the managerial position at Olympique Marseille despite being under contract as head coach of Nigeria’s national team.
The move has sparked fresh controversy surrounding the Malian tactician’s future with the Nigeria Football Federation.
Chelle’s application reportedly followed rejected 19-point proposal
According to reports, Chelle submitted a 19-point proposal to the NFF on January 22, 2026, seeking improved contractual terms.
Central to the proposal was a demand to increase his monthly salary from $50,000 to $130,000, a figure meant to cover his entire technical crew and personal assistant, rather than the widely circulated $100,000.
After the federation reportedly rejected his demands, Chelle is said to have turned his attention to opportunities abroad, applying for the vacant managerial role at Marseille while still officially in charge of the Super Eagles.
The development has raised questions about his commitment to the Nigerian national team amid ongoing contractual tensions.
Agent switch fuels Chelle exit rumours
In a bid to strengthen his candidacy in France, Chelle reportedly parted ways with his long-time associate and agent, Sidibe Abraham Brehima.
Brehima previously facilitated Chelle’s appointments in Nigeria and Mali following his dismissal at Boulogne.
The Super Eagles boss subsequently signed with Wilders Sport as he pursued the Marseille role. However, the French club ultimately opted against hiring him, appointing former Senegal international Habib Beye instead.
With Marseille no longer an option, attention now shifts back to Chelle’s uncertain position with Nigeria.
