The 8th edition of the Bonny Island Marathon, held on Saturday, delivered thrilling competition as elite runners from across Nigeria.
Gang James Boyi of Plateau State produced a commanding display in the men’s elite race, crossing the finish line in 45 minutes, 24 seconds to claim first place and the ₦750,000 grand prize.
Wadata Barau of Bauchi State finished second in 49:03, earning ₦500,000, while Nkeki Maina Yakubu from Borno State placed third with a time of 49:26, taking home ₦300,000.
Danlami Shines in Elite Women’s Race
In the elite women’s category, Plateau State also celebrated success as Goar Grace Danlami powered to victory in 55:16, securing her ₦750,000 prize.
She was closely followed by Elias Jecinta, who finished in 55:39 to earn ₦500,000, while Esther Chigozirim Ogbuga claimed third place in 1:04:23, receiving ₦300,000.
Local and Indigenous Runners Take Centre Stage
The marathon continued its tradition of promoting grassroots development through the Indigenous Category, reserved exclusively for natives of Bonny Local Government Area.
Nengi Wilcox emerged as the fastest local male runner with a time of 52:53, while Banigo Racheal Isaac topped the female indigenous race in 1:30:15.
Future stars were also in focus during the 5K Teen Run, aimed at nurturing young athletes. Joshua Pam of Plateau State won the male category, while Ozuomba Abigail of Rivers State finished as the fastest female teen.
