Onyango salutes Zambia's Kennedy Mweene for the decade of healthly competition at Sundowns

One of Mamelodi Sundowns' longest-serving players, Kennedy Mweene, announced his retirement from football after a decade at the club.

Mweene, a former captain of the Chipolopolo, Zambia's national football team, made the revelation in a video Mamelodi Sundowns shared on Monday evening.

In the video, fellow goalkeepers Reyaad Pieterse, Denis Onyango, and goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson all paid tribute to Mweene.

"Mweene was always a happy face when we were training, but of course, he gave 100% when we were given a task," Onyango, the former Uganda Cranes captain, told Sundowns media.

"He's the only goalkeeper in the PSL that has won all titles in Africa; he has been an inspiration to me since I joined Mamelodi Sundowns," Onyango added.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner joined the Brazilians in 2013, winning 16 trophies at the club, including eight Dstv Premiership titles and the CAF Champions League.

"I have shared the dressing room with many good players," Mwene said before adding.

"It's time to celebrate; I've achieved everything because of the people around me."

"Football has taken me to places, and I never dreamt that one day I would be able to share the same pitch with some of the greatest players that Africa has offered."

"I am hanging up my boots and gloves because I have played my part both on the national team and at the club level; thank you to everyone that has contributed to my life.

'Kapalaya' was also on hand to appreciate his former coaches: "Most of the coaches I have gone through have made me a better person and player; it has been a successful career."

Kennedy Mweene has already been phased into an assistant goalkeeping role under head coach Rulani Mokwena and is expected.
