Official: Manchester United announce new manager to replace Ruben Amorim
The Red Devils parted ways with manager Ruben Amorim just hours after he publicly questioned the club's hierarchy.
The decision came in the wake of a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leeds on Sunday, which left the team in sixth place in the Premier League.
Amorim's tenure came to an abrupt end following post-match comments that hinted at significant friction with the board. He stressed his role was that of a manager, not a head coach, suggesting a disagreement over control and authority.
Fletcher takes over
Following the sacking of Amorim, Manchester United have announced in their official statement that Fletcher will become the new coach until the end of the season.
In an official statement, Manchester United confirmed the departure. "Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United," the club announced.
"Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May."
The statement continued: "With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."
The club concluded by thanking the Portuguese manager for his efforts. "The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future. Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."
Club legend and current Under-18s coach, Darren Fletcher, has been appointed as interim manager until the end of the season.
His first match in charge will be the upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday night.
