Nigeria vs Uganda: Second string Super Eagles down cranes to top AFCON 2025 group
Super Eagles finished their AFCON 2025 Group Stage with a perfect nine points from a possible nine after defeating the Cranes of Uganda in their final match of the first phase.
A brace in three minutes from Raphael Onyedika helped Nigeria to a comfortable victory against 10-man Uganda after Paul Onuachu had given the Super Eagles a first-half lead.
Nigeria vs Uganda: How it happened
Having already secured the top spot in Group C, Nigeria manager Eric Chelle rotated his squad with eight changes for their final group match against Uganda.
Despite the shake-up, the Super Eagles dominated from the start. Paul Onuachu opened the scoring in the first half, converting a cutback from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru after earlier being denied by veteran keeper Denis Onyango.
Uganda’s struggles intensified after halftime when substitute goalkeeper Salim Magoola was sent off for handling the ball outside the area while blocking a Victor Osimhen shot.
Forced to use their third goalkeeper of the night, Uganda stood little chance against Nigeria’s relentless pressure. Raphael Onyedika secured the victory with two quick-fire goals, both assisted by Samuel Chukwueze, to put the Super Eagles up 3–0.
Uganda managed a late consolation goal through an exquisite chip from Rogers Mato, but the 3–1 defeat left them at the bottom of the group.
Nigeria finished eight points clear at the summit, heading into the knockout stages with significant momentum and showcased impressive squad depth.
