Nigeria's Super Falcons deny plan to boycott FIFAWWC opener vs Canada
Nigeria’s Women’s national football team the Super Falcons have denied reports about plans to boycott their FIFAWWC opener.
The Super Falcons are in Australia preparing for the global showpiece co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.
However, their preparation has been rocked by disagreements between manager Randy Waldrum and his employers the NFF.
Super Falcons deny strike action
Following a war of words between Waldrum and the NFF, there was a report about the Falcons reportedly planning to boycott the game against Canada on July 21 in Australia.
As reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria via Mirror, the Falcons have plans to boycott their opener at the FIFAWWC until the current situation with the NFF is settled.
However, the captain of the team, Onome Ebi, has now come out to debunk the rumours. According to the experienced defender, the Falcons are focused on the task ahead and have no idea where the report on strike action came from.
“I have no idea where that (boycott) is coming from. We (the players) never had any such conversations as regards that; we are good with training and ready for the World Cup,” Ebi told thenff.com
Onome, who will play in her sixth FIFA Women's World Cup, added that the Falcons are in good spirits and ready to go.
“The sessions have been intense, motivating and okay,” she added. “The girls are in good shape, good spirit and ready to go. The training speaks for itself as regards the mood in camp because this is what I bargained for.
“The players are meeting up with physical and tactical aspects of training; the mood is okay.”
The Super Falcons are in Group B alongside Olympic champions Canada, co-hosts Australia and debutants Republic of Ireland.
