Despite doubts in the Chelsea hierarchy over Nagelsmann’s suitability for the role due to his age, the German manager is still considered the leading contender for the vacant role ahead of candidates like Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino.
Nagelsman edges closer to Chelsea job
Nagelsmann is seen as more tactically savvy and more in-tune with the project Chelsea are trying to build, and they believe the German manager will be able to turn their season around and deliver on the promise of the expensively assembled squad they currently have.
Nagelsmann was released from his Bayern Munich role during the March international break, despite being in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, winning eight out of eight matches in the 2022/23 season and being one point off the top of the Bundesliga table, while also being in the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal.
Talks between Nagelsmann and Chelsea are believed to be progressing without problems, but no official deal has been struck between the two parties, although the expectation is that this will change soon.
The German manager intended to stay out of football until the summer, but he could be tempted to return early by Chelsea’s project.
