Murang’a Seal captain Joe Waithera has sent a warning to Gor Mahia ahead of their FKF Cup semi finals when both sides face each other at Dandora Stadium in the FKF Cup semi finals this Saturday.

Seal’s defence frustrated Gor Mahia when both sides met each other in an  FKF Premier League match at the SportPesa Arena in Murang’a on Sunday afternoon as the game ended 0-0.

Speaking after the draw, Waithera explained the strategy they deployed that allowed them to avoid defeat against the record league champions, which dented their title aspirations for the season in the process.

“It was a tough game considering where we are in the league. Right now, it is about your desire and character,” Waithera told the media after the match.

“We have to respect them but give all our best. We expected the three points against them but we will still take that point because it will help.”

“They were more disciplined tactically, so when they subbed in ball players, we had to sit back and stay compact as a team. We appreciate the point.”

A Shot at History

Murang’a Seal, who were promoted to the top flight in 2023, are dreaming of a historic FKF Cup final appearance—but they will need to get past 11-time Cup winners Gor Mahia to make that dream a reality. And based on recent history, Seal will believe they can.

In four meetings since their promotion, Seal have lost only once to Gor Mahia and drawn the other three. That record gives them quiet confidence heading into Saturday’s semi-final.

“We hope things will go well. We will face Gor Mahia at Dandora in the FKF Cup semi-final, and then after that, we have to face both Mara Sugar and FC Talanta as they struggle to avoid relegation,” Waithera said.

Survival Still the Priority

Seal currently sit in the relegation playoff zone with 32 points from 32 matches, just one point above Bidco United and two ahead of Nairobi City Stars. With a tricky run-in, including matches against relegation-threatened sides, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

“Our character will determine everything because it is do or die, and we have to survive at all costs,” the captain emphasized.

While a cup final appearance would be a monumental achievement for the Murang’a-based side, survival in the top flight remains their primary mission. However, if Saturday’s encounter is anything like their last one, Gor Mahia may once again find Seal to be a stubborn obstacle in their path to silverware.
