The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed that the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 will be hosted by Morocco, despite discussions around potential date adjustments.
The 16th edition of WAFCON is scheduled from 17th March to 3rd April 2026 in Morocco.
What Motsepe said
Speaking after the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam, Motsepe dismissed speculation that Morocco could withdraw from hosting duties or that the tournament might be postponed.
“I am very happy to confirm that the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 will be hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco,” Motsepe said.
He added, “Morocco has shown a strong commitment to African football and women’s football. They have the infrastructure, experience and passion to deliver another outstanding tournament.”
While reports suggested Morocco had explored the possibility of adjusting the schedule, Motsepe made it clear that the dates are fixed due to FIFA alignment.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026, and serves as a qualifier for the FIFA Women's World Cup.
“We can’t change the date because it is part of the qualification pathway for the Women’s World Cup. WAFCON will continue and it will be successful,” Motsepe explained.

Recent speculation had linked South Africa as a potential replacement host, with Deputy Sports Minister Peace Mabe indicating readiness if needed.
The 2026 edition will mark the third consecutive time Morocco hosts the tournament, following successful editions in 2022 and 2024.
The competition will feature an expanded 16-team format and is expected to play a major role in determining Africa’s representatives at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
