'I don’t want to hear that question again' - CAF president confirms 2027 AFCON will hold in East Africa
President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has dismissed speculation surrounding the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, confirming the tournament will proceed as planned in East Africa.
Speaking at a CAF meeting in Tanzania on Friday, Motsepe expressed full confidence in the joint hosting arrangement between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
What Motsepe said
He firmly ruled out any possibility of postponement to 2028.
“I know AFCON will be staged here, so I don’t want to hear that question again of whether AFCON will be played in East Africa or it will be taken away,” Motsepe said.
He acknowledged the extensive work already invested in preparations and urged stakeholders to ignore rumours questioning the tournament’s status.
“We have done a lot to have AFCON held in East Africa, and our commitment remains. I know there will be a lot of news in the coming weeks about AFCON status, but let us stay focused because we know AFCON will be held here," he added.
"I am enormously confident that we will succeed in hosting the 2027 AFCON in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda."

The 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be historic, marking the first time the competition is co-hosted by three nations.
It also signals AFCON’s return to the CECAFA region for the first time since 1976, when Ethiopia staged the tournament.
