Morocco was crowned champions of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre.
C. F. Manohantsoa opened the scoring for Madagascar in the 9th minute, stunning the North Africans. But Morocco responded swiftly, with Youssef Mehri levelling the tie before Oussama Lamlaoui fired them ahead just before half-time.
Madagascar showed resilience in the second half, equalising through T. N. Rakotondraibe.
However, Lamlaoui struck again late in the match, sealing Morocco’s triumph and sparking celebrations among the Atlas Lions.
Morocco’s CHAN dominance
The victory marks Morocco’s third CHAN title in eight years, having previously lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2020.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, prize allocations were confirmed.
Morocco claimed the gold medal and a $3.5 million payout, while runners-up Madagascar earned $1.2 million for their impressive campaign.
