Mixed reactions as residents, athletes arrive for National Sports Festival

As the 22nd National Sports Festival kicked off in Ogun state, there were mixed reactions from the residents of the Gateway people. The residents express a blend of excitement and concern regarding the event's preparations and anticipated impact.

In Abeokuta, the state capital, a visit by Pulse Sports to the renovated M.K.O. Abiola Sports Arena revealed that the enhancements to the sports facilities were in good shape.

The sports complex has undergone renovations, and new solar-powered streetlights now illuminate the city.

The Games, which are scheduled to be held at different centres including the Remo Stars Stadium, Babcock University, Alake Sports Centre, Dipo Dina International Stadium, Gateway Stadium, etc

A resident, Ishola Samuel, remarked, "The town is looking more lovely, especially at night. You can feel something is coming."

He also highlighted the role of social media in raising awareness, stating that platforms like TikTok have featured videos of the stadium and other landmarks facilities.

Despite these improvements, some residents feel disconnected from the festival's buildup.

Joseph Tade expressed surprise upon learning about the event, saying, "This is the first time I'm hearing of such. Really? Gateway Games 2024? If this is happening in Ogun State and we in Ogbere don't know, then I don't know what to say."

Similarly, Adebowale Rosheedah voiced concerns about the lack of information reaching his community.

"We are all supposed to be stakeholders as citizens of this state. But we don't even have a clue about what's happening right under our noses," she lamented.

Beyond the sporting events, residents anticipate economic benefits from the influx of visitors.

Adetoun Ademola hopes the festival will stimulate commercial activities in towns and cities around the sporting venues.

He said, "I've seen the billboards, yes. But I'm not aware if it's going to change anything. Everything still looks pretty normal."

The state government projects that the festival will attract at least 15,000 people, providing opportunities for local businesses and boosting the hospitality sector.

As the Gateway Games commence, Ogun State stands at the intersection of anticipation and scrutiny. While infrastructural developments signal readiness, effective communication and inclusive outreach remain crucial to ensuring that all residents feel part of this national celebration of sports and unity.
