"He was fantastic!" – Michael Carrick names ‘Difference Maker’ who masterminded Man City downfall
Michael Carrick’s short reign at Manchester United could not have started more perfectly for him and the Red Devils.
A 2-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Saturday has completely shifted the mood at Old Trafford, and according to Carrick, there was one man at the heart of the tactical masterclass: Bruno Fernandes.
While the headlines will rightfully focus on the goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu, Carrick was quick to point out the selfless, disciplined shift put in by his captain to stifle City’s world-class midfield.
The Disciplined Role
Speaking after the match, Carrick admitted that his game plan required Fernandes to sacrifice some of his usual attacking freedom to protect the team's shape.
"I have spoken to Bruno (Fernandes), I have known him a long time now and again I thought he was fantastic today the way he played the position," Carrick revealed.
"He's so clever and takes up spaces and he had a big disciplined role defensively to protect the team from anything coming through from the middle as much as possible."

Carrick noted that the win wasn't just about flair, but about the hard yards. "It wasn't all kinds of playing in positivity to that point. But he's just got so much quality Bruno, he can adapt and play in that position, he is a real threat and he made the difference."
By The Numbers: A captain’s performance
The statistics from Saturday’s derby back up Carrick’s "fantastic" assessment. Fernandes was the engine room for United, staying on for 90 minutes and dominating nearly every metric on the pitch.
Despite being tasked with a ‘disciplined’ defensive role, Fernandes still managed to be United's primary creative outlet.
He led the breakaway for the first goal, providing the assist for Mbeumo, and was centimeters away from scoring himself if not for a marginal VAR offside call in the first half.

Carrick’s decision to trust Fernandes with a more structured, defensive-minded role paid off in spectacular fashion.
By clogging the middle and denying Rodri and Bernardo Silva space, Fernandes allowed United’s pacey wingers to exploit City’s high line on the counter.
As Carrick looks to build on this momentum, one thing is clear: in his new-look United, Bruno Fernandes remains the indispensable difference maker.
