Manchester United are considering offering Casemiro a contract extension beyond this season, but only if the veteran Brazilian midfielder agrees to take a substantial pay cut.

The club, eager to reduce their wage bill and reshape the squad under manager Ruben Amorim, view the 32-year-old as a valuable leader both on and off the pitch — but not at his current £375,000-a-week salary.

United have the option to extend Casemiro’s current deal by an additional 12 months, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2027.

The Red Devils sources say the decision will hinge on the midfielder’s willingness to lower his wages, part of United’s broader financial strategy aimed at curbing lavish contracts and improving sustainability under new footballing leadership.

Since joining from Real Madrid in 2022, Casemiro has made 83 Premier League appearances and scored seven goals. His influence in midfield, experience in high-pressure matches, and leadership qualities have been widely acknowledged, particularly during United’s recent turbulent seasons.

However, his hefty salary has placed him among the club’s top earners, alongside the likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

Despite his age and declining pace, Casemiro remains a pivotal figure in Amorim’s setup. He started four of United’s first five Premier League matches this season before being sent off for two bookable offences in the win over Chelsea.

After serving his suspension in the defeat to Brentford, he returned to the starting lineup in the 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break, playing 85 minutes and earning praise for his composure and control.

During the recent international window, Casemiro played the full 90 minutes in both of Brazil’s fixtures — a 5-0 victory over South Korea and a thrilling 3-2 defeat to Japan. His heavy workload has raised concerns about his fitness ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

United’s Midfield Plans and the Wage-Bill Rebuild

Manchester United’s management is expected to oversee significant changes to the midfield next summer, with at least one marquee signing anticipated. Amorim and the recruitment team are believed to be targeting a younger, more dynamic presence in the middle of the park as part of a long-term rebuild.

The futures of both Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte remain uncertain. Mainoo, who has shown flashes of brilliance, is yet to fully establish himself under Amorim, while Ugarte — signed earlier this year — is still adapting to the demands of English football. Given these uncertainties, United see Casemiro’s experience and leadership as vital during the transition phase, even if his role gradually shifts toward mentoring younger players.

Behind the scenes, United have been making steady progress in reducing their wage commitments.

The departures of high earners such as Raphael Varane, Anthony Martial, and Jadon Sancho (on loan) have already eased financial pressures. The club’s hierarchy, led by sporting director Dan Ashworth, believes a more disciplined wage structure is essential to restoring balance and competitiveness.

Casemiro’s contract situation encapsulates United’s new direction — blending financial pragmatism with respect for senior players’ contributions.

Should he agree to reduced terms, the midfielder could remain a crucial figure at Old Trafford for at least another season, continuing to pass on the winning mentality that defined his trophy-laden years at Real Madrid.
