Manchester City assistant manager Kolo Touré has backed his home nation, the Ivory Coast, to mount a strong title defense at the Africa Cup of Nations, which gets underway later this week in Morocco.
Speaking before Manchester City’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace, the former Arsenal and City defender shared his expectations for the continental tournament, acknowledging the depth of quality among Africa’s elite nations.
What Toure said
Touré was quick to point out that the Ivory Coast will face stiff competition, particularly from North African powerhouses who have consistently impressed on the international stage.
“It’s going to be difficult,” Touré said. “North African countries like Morocco, Egypt, and Algeria will be very strong. I also see my country, the Ivory Coast, in the mix.”
Despite the challenges ahead, the 43-year-old remains confident that the Elephants possess the quality and experience needed to compete at the highest level.
Ivory Coast entered the tournament as defending champions, having dramatically lifted the AFCON trophy at the last edition.
Touré, who was part of the coaching setup during that triumph, believes the current squad has what it takes to repeat the feat.
“We won the last AFCON and we still have a very good team,” he added. “I’m counting on my country to win the tournament.”
Heading into the tournament, many have tipped the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Morocco as favorites to win AFCON.
