London Diamond League: Oblique Seville defeats Noah Lyles to win men's 100m event

Jamaican track star Oblique Seville dropped a massive statement with a stunning victory over Olympic champion Noah Lyles to win loaded men's 100m event at the London Diamond League.

The 24-year-old blasted away from the rest of the field from the sound of the gun and held on brilliantly to the finish line, clocking a blistering 9.86s (-0.6).

Lyles, competing in his first 100m race of the season, finished strongly to take second in a Season's Best (SB) of 10.00s, just edging homeboy Zharnel Hughes in 10.02s.

Another Jamaican, Ackeem Blake closed off fourth in 10.04s, and surprisingly, South African speed king Akani Simbine undefeated before this race, was fifth in 10.11s.

Seville's performance to defeat Lyles is boldly impressive. It strengthens his position as a major force and a top challenger for a medal at the World Championships in Tokyo this September.

Despite running with a hamstring injury at the Jamaican Championships in June, he still ran impressively to finish second in 9.83s behind Kishane Thompson's world-leading time of 9.75s.

For Lyles, the American is surely on track to build on his performances for the rest of the season, with his full focus on defending his 100m and 200m world titles in Tokyo this summer.
