As it happened

Liverpool made just the one change from the side that beat West Ham 2-0, with Andy Robertson replacing Milos Kerkez at left-back. Mohamed Salah remained on the bench for the game.

Sunderland made two changes from their win over Bournemouth. Trai Hume and Brian Brobbey replaced Bertrand Traore and Wilson Isidor, as reported by BBC.

The first half failed to produce a goal as Sunderland held their ground against the Premier League champions, depriving them of creating chances as they headed into the half-time break.

They shocked the Anfield crowd in the 67th minute when Chemsdine Talbi was given all the time in the world to shoot from about 22 yards out and it deflected off Virgil van Dijk to beat the diving Alisson.

However, Sunderland could not withstand the pressure from Liverpool after scoring and conceded the equaliser after Florian Wirtz beat some defenders and shot the ball, deflecting off Nordi Mukiele into the net.
